It was a quiet evening, and a couple was enjoying a TV show about various religions, rituals, and how people have experienced miracles in their lives.

“Honestly, I’m starting to question everything,” the wife said, her voice laced with uncertainty. “I’ve been praying and following all the rituals, but nothing seems to be working in my favor. I feel like I’m just going through the motions. I’ve reached a point of no hope, and my belief system is shattered. I don’t even know what I truly believe in anymore.”

“Why are your beliefs changing because of your circumstances? Shouldn’t your faith be independent of outcomes or rituals?” asked the husband.

The discussion turned into an argument as both were firm in their thought processes. The wife had an unwavering belief that “I am experiencing disbelief in rituals because of the current circumstances,” while the husband was firm in his belief that “beliefs are independent of rituals and outcomes.”

The question of “Who is right?” remains unanswered.

Religion and rituals are merely parts of the larger belief system that shapes our values, behaviors, and worldviews. Belief systems encompass our personal philosophies, cultural traditions, and spiritual practices. They influence how we perceive the world, make decisions, and interact with others.

As a life coach, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and belief systems, even if they belong to same family or bloodline, every person has different belief system.

Some people are religious but don’t believe in any rituals , some do rituals just to continue the legacy and have inner conflicts regarding the same. It’s essential to go beyond religion and rituals to understand and respect the complex tapestry of human beliefs.

To truly understand and respect people’s belief systems, we must refrain from viewing them through our own lenses (of what we believe in). As coaches, we need to engage with others’ worldviews with empathy and open-mindedness and non judgemental acceptance. This requires active listening, asking questions, and seeking to understand the underlying beliefs and values that drive their actions.

By embracing the diversity of belief systems, a coach can:

  • Foster deeper connections and empathy
  • Break down stereotypes and misconceptions
  • Cultivate a more inclusive and compassionate community
  • Enhance personal growth and self-awareness

As life coaches, we can play a vital role in promoting this understanding. By creating a safe and non-judgmental space, we can help individuals explore their own belief systems and values. We can encourage them to engage with others’ perspectives, fostering greater empathy and respect.

In conclusion, let us move beyond the limitations of religion and rituals. Let us embrace the rich diversity of human belief systems, and in doing so, create a more harmonious and inclusive world.

PS : These are purely my views based on my understanding of belief systems in my coaching practice. They do not focus on any particular religion or ritual in any way.
